Google Password Manager at work

Google Password Manager can be a reasonable place for an employee's individual work credentials. The business decision is whether it gives your organization enough control when an account belongs to a team, an administrator leaves or a business passkey must move. Those needs often matter more than whether the browser can generate a strong password.
What does Google document?
Google says passwords can be stored in a Google Account or on a device. Its help page says native password sharing is limited to a family group. That should not be treated as a managed company-vault feature. The Chrome administrator policy lets an organization allow, prohibit or leave saving to the user; prohibiting new saves does not delete existing saved passwords. Passkey policy is a separate setting.

Do not confuse Chrome browser policy with full credential lifecycle management. If a service supports individual identities and SSO, use those instead of a shared password. If a shared password is unavoidable, assign an owner, limit access and plan a rotation after a leaver.
When keeping it is sensible
A small team may keep the built-in tool if most apps have named accounts, SSO and MFA; shared passwords are rare; recovery is documented; and the owner can verify offboarding. The additional subscription might not close a meaningful gap. Make the decision with a short test, not a generic “business-grade” label.
When to trial a dedicated manager
A dedicated team vault becomes useful when multiple people use one service account, work passkeys need ownership rules, teams change frequently, or audit and recovery need central administration. Compare 1Password Business, Bitwarden Teams, Proton Pass Essentials and NordPass Business by the exact plan and workflow. A five-step decision test
- List administrator accounts, shared logins and business passkeys.
- Check whether each can use named accounts or SSO instead of a shared secret.
- Practice adding a new person and removing a departing person, including underlying service sessions.
- Test emergency recovery with the account owner unavailable.
- If any step fails, trial one team-vault product with the same scenarios and compare the real administrative effort.
Start with what you own
If Chrome and your identity provider meet the test, document that decision and review it quarterly. If they do not, use the business password-manager comparison to shortlist a specific plan before paying for seats.
